Our two primary projects for 2024-2026 are:

  • Trout in the Classroom - continuing to grow this educational program in local schools
  • Mohawk Valley TU River Champions -  building a citizen science water quality monitoring program in the Mohawk Valley and Adirondack foothills watersheds

As we grow we need help, so please reach out to us and get involved.  Join us in making a difference today.

BIG CREEK TREE PLANTING EVENT

TU MEMBERS SUPPORTED THE RECENT NY DEC TREK FOR TROUT EVENT

Volunteers posted signs on Adirondack ponds to help make anglers aware that bait fish should not be used in these brook trout ponds. Here's a short video about the event.

Join Mohawk Valley Trout Unlimited Chapter to help protect our precious local natural resources.

NATIVE brook trout cannot compete with invasive bait fisH

These signs are posted throughout the Adirondacks to help protect native brook trout from invasive species.

We Are Trout Unlimited

We banded together. Picked up shovels. Rolled rocks. Planted trees. Together we’ve built coalitions. Passed state and federal laws to protect our rivers. We will build on our legacy of accomplishment and together we will inspire a larger, younger, and more diverse array of conservation advocates.

About Mohawk Valley

Our Region

Our Territory is Central NY, but we focus mainly on Oneida and Herkimer County.

Learn more about Oneida County.

The Foothills

Also referred to as the foothills of the Adirondacks, our chapter focuses on the drainage basins of the Mohawk River, Black River, and West Canada Creek.

Our Programs

Now is the time to focus on kids and educating them on the importance of water and how water gets to us and where it goes, specifically in our region.  Each year in the spring we go to local elementary schools and educate our kids on aquatic entomology and conservation in general.

Trout in the classroom

Did you know that we have over 25 Trout in the Classroom programs happening in our chapter?  It is rewarding work and we need more help to continue to grow the program.  Please contact us if you are interested in helping our cause and adopting a classroom to support.   For more general info on T.I.C. please check with TU National.

What's bugging us!

One of our new major programs is  evaluating our local ecosystems and getting a baseline of their health.  We do this by monitoring our local streams water quality each month and also periodically assessing the types of  macroinvertebrates present,

Want to help?  Its easy.

Come to a meeting or contact us and get involved in monitoring one of the rivers or creeks that need exploring.  You don't have to be a fisherman to get involved in helping our local waters.
